The FlickMovieFilm.com Manifesto
About this Site
FlickMovieFilm.com is a digital archive of my thoughts on cinema, a personal repository of reviews and critical essays born from a deep-seated belief in the power of the cinema. In an age of algorithms and consensus-driven ("access media") criticism, this site stands as a singular voice—unfiltered, uncompromised, and unafraid to call it as it sees it. The format and presentation is simple and straightforward, and I hope you will find it easy and rewarding to use.
Here, you will find reviews that are meant for brevity and clarity, each crafted to provide you with a snapshot of the film's essence, its stengths, and its weaknesses. At the moment, reviews are rated on a scale of 1 to 5 "stars", that I will use to denote how good the piece of cinema is as it pertains to its category. At its core, FlickMovieFilm.com is a categorical declaration of cinematic art between three distinct categories of cinema: flicks, movies, and films. It has taken me a decade to come to that conclusion, but it seems to be a more utilitarian way of reviewing without as much subjectivity showing.
"Flicks" are the popcorn fluff, simple entertainment that may be lacking in depth, but may provide some entertainment value, maybe as background noise at a party, or some mindless fun in a guilty pleasure sort of way. "Movies" are the middle ground, where there is a balance of entertainment and merit to it as a piece art in the world of cinema. "Films" are the pinnacle of what motion pictures can be, where the artistry, craftsmanship, and storytelling come together to cement the piece as valuable to the very history of cinema.

About the Author
My name is Jim Kaneyama, and I am the sole author of the content you find here. I am currently not being paid as a professional critic, but you will find that I provide a level of professionalism and integrity to the work I do here. Please note that I haven't any affiliation with film studios, distributors, or promotional companies. This platform is a passion project, a quiet corner of the internet where I can explore the vast landscape of cinema on my own terms. There are no sponsored posts, no freebies influencing my judgment, and no obligations other than to my own declarations here and Your trust as a reader.
Years ago, I was active on a social media platform's movie review section, where people would give me feedback that they found my reviews insightful and/or helped them discover great things to watch. During this time, as a teacher of English as a foreign language, my students' and my own favorite lessons in class were "movie days" where we would watch a film and discuss it. At last count I'd seen about 2,000 films from around the world, and so it takes a lot to impress me, however I can appreciate any film for what it is.
As someone who has been flirting with professional writing in freelance, I would not be opposed to "going pro" in the field, but I have no interest in being a "shill" for any studio or distributor. Call me Jay Sherman! But seriously, if you'd like to use/publish my reviews, or if you are a studio or distributor who would like to send me a pre-release film for review, please contact me via the contact form. I will respond to all serious inquiries. Or if you just want to say hello, I would love to hear from you, too. ^_^
A Declaration of Principles
I believe in the existence of objective value in art. Not all films are created equal. Some rise to the level of timeless masterpieces, while others, for all their ambition, fall short. To pretend otherwise is a disservice to the craft and a betrayal of the audience. However, this conviction does not invalidate personal taste. A film can be technically flawed and still resonate deeply, and a work of genius can sometimes fail to deliver. It is my mission to take an honest stance in celebrating brilliance, dissecting failure, and respecting even the "trash" for what it is, in its proper context and without apology.
My reviews are not an attempt to tell you what to like. They are an honest record of my encounter with a work of art. They are observations, arguments, and reactions forged in the belief that criticism should be a rigorous and courageous pursuit of truth, unburdened by commercial pressure or popular opinion. Thank you for visiting FlickMovieFilm.com, thank you for reading this far, and I hope you will find something of value here. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!
